Telia Rumal is a double ikat weave originating in 19th-century Chirala, Andhra Pradesh, is renowned for its intricate resist-dyed designs used in turbans and keffiyehs. Revived in Puttapaka by Gajam Govardhana in 1975, this craft received a Geographical Indication Tag in 2020. The meticulous process involves mapping designs on graph paper, resist-dyeing warp and weft yarns, and weaving on a fly shuttle pit loom.

Craft
The history of Telia Rumal, a double ikat weave, dates back to the 19th century in Chirala, Andhra Pradesh, India. "Telia" means oil, and "Rumal" means handkerchief. Originally used for turbans and keffiyehs, it was exported to Africa and Arabia. Gajam Govardhana revived the craft in Puttapaka in 1975. Puttapaka Telia Rumal received a Geographical Indication Tag in May 2020. Using the double-ikat technique, both warp and weft are resist-dyed before weaving on a traditional fly shuttle pit loom.
